Xref Issue

I'm using acad 2015. When I create a drawing using xrefs all is well until a few weeks or a month goes by, when I open the drawing I only see the layout items the Xref is gone and I can't reload. I have to detach the xref and reload it after purging he drawing. This happens on all different files.
